"Good," she says immediately, without thinking. Then she shakes her head, swallows the lump in her throat, and says, "I used to say he would do better to reck his own rede, to tame his own unruliness before bidding me tame mine. But to tell true, I would rather he were truer to his nature, and be a happier man for it." It's the one piece of her father's advice that always made sense to her, that didn't fit with the rest of his advice about minding her station and holding her tongue. Looking around her niece's room, letting it sink in that she has a niece, her brother has a husband, she starts to think he must be happier here.
